After being inspired by |ALPHA| Wolf's awesome map in 6 hours mad mapping skills, and the fact that the level design comp won't start until after 4.2 is released, I thought a speed mapping competition could be a great way to pass the time. I haven't done anything like this myself but it seems like it should be a lot of fun.

How Long: ~1 week. 1st - 9th of November. I want it to cover two weekends to give people a bit of extra time, and in case some people are busy on one weekend. The start date should give us a week and a bit to notify everyone and make sure everyone is happy with the rules.

Rules: Just to make it easy to build and judge I think we should limit the competition to a certain gametype and player size. CTF and 8-12 players. Of course you should feel free to add support for other gametypes as you wish but thats not the aim. No starting on maps before the start date. Download sizes should be kept to a minimum, so not too many custom textures/sounds/models.

Judging: A forum poll. It's not perfect... but then neither will the maps be  tongue

Prizes: The joy of a job well done and the acclaim of Urt players everywhere* grin

So who's interested!?

P.S. This is not a FS endorsed or organised post. I'm just doing this on my own. If any FS members have a issue with this or if this will conflict with Dragonne's comp, the 4.2 release, or anything else feel free to cancel/remove this. Its not my intention to tread on anyone's toes. Just to have some fun.

* Joy and acclaim are subject to conditions

I think this is a great idea.

Although you're asking certain death pitting modelers like myself vs you ancient old brush based mappers!

Bring it on!  evil

In all seriousness, we should have someone produce a game model and a texture.. like say a park bench, that we release only when the competition starts.

The goal then, is that this object sets the tone and theme of the map - thus cutting back any temptation to have work prepped in advance...

@TwentySeven

Awesome idea. I agree 100%. I was thinking of limiting the map to a certain setting, like a factory or office, but that would be too constraining and dull. Requiring models + textures is perfect.

Sounds fun. I'm in.

2 weekends, some prefabs released before the start. I like it.

Let's see what the old-school can do.

*Wonders, could this be a way of Tub asking for me to come back to mapping without saying it out loud? Because the 2 arena maps weren't THAT good*
