Welcome to the 2008 Urban Terror Level Design Contest! Here are the official dates, rules, and requirements:
Rules:#1 The contest has begun! (Sunday, November 16th, 2008)
#2 Final submissions must be sent to me (I will post details to allow this later) and dated no later than
Midnight, SATURDAY, JANUARY 31, 2009 EST (GMT-5).
******** UPDATED ********#3 You must post your team names (if you have a team), specific theme/location, and map name in this thread on or before
December 31, 2008. ******** UPDATED ******** Multiple entries may use the same theme. Use this format:
Designer/Team:Level Name:BSP Name:Theme/Location:Description/Storyline:******** UPDATED ******** Entries will be accepted until December 31, 2008 due to the extended due date.
#4 Each submission must be playable in at least the following gametypes: FFA, TS, TDM, CTF.
NO JUMP MAPS, but you can put jumps in the map of course. Your entry should target a player count of between 4v4 (8 players) and 8v8 (16 players), and have enough spawns in each gametype to support 16 players.
#5 Bump and Specular will be appreciated, but not required. (Can your submission compete against other submissions that have it? Your call.) Reference, updated engine, and updated compiler for bump/spec can be found here:
http://forums.urbanterror.net/index.php/topic,12609.0.html#6 Your submission MUST include ALL assets required to play the level in a final PK3, AND include the .map file separately within a larger ZIP/RAR. .map files are not for public release, only for reference if the judges require it and possibly needed if the level is included in 4.2 as a prize, which isn't confirmed yet due to timing. Try not to use many of the assets that come with UrT. This is because 4.2 (as well as future releases) may change them and alter your submission. If you do use UrT assets, DO NOT include them in your final submission. They are already in the game assets and are not required.
#7 All assets included in your submission must be freely redistributable. "Assets" meaning textures, models, sounds. "Freely distributable" meaning no restrictions (read as no "pay for license to redistrubute" or "royalty fees") on them for distribution. This does NOT relate to your .map file, which will be kept private. The main point of this is nobody (meaning ME!) wants to get snagged into having to pay for anything because someone used a texture they shouldn't have. You also cannot use any assets from any other game (including id software games, no Q3 stuff, sorry!).
#8 An individual submission may be entered by a team of up to 3 people (not all level designers are texture artists or modellers). Anyone participating in a submission (meaning their name is on it) may not participate in other submissions. Basically, if you want your name on a submission, work only on that submission. The reason for this is to allow only one chance for any designer/artist to have a winning submission. If you have other assets already in the community (from previously released levels or whatever) and they are used on another submission, this won't be held against you.
#9 Any level that has already been started before this post was made will be disqualified. The contest only allows the period between November 16, 2008 and the last moment of 2008 (EST time zone, GMT-5) for development of contest entries. Assets may of course be older, but the level itself may only have been worked on during this period.
Prizes will be announced during the competition once they are settled. There are currently prizes in the works for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, and possibly an honorable mention prize. Prizes may or may not be dividable between members of a team if a team is chosen to receive a prize. Bragging rights of course, will be spread amongst all members of the winning teams/designers.
AND NOW... The moment you've all been waiting for. The theme!
*************************THEME REQUIREMENTS*************************1) The theme of the contest is:
Public Terror2) Your setting
MUST include a public gathering place that terrorists would strike to affect many people at once. This location will be the focus of your level, so a simple storefront won't qualify. The
inside of the focused area must be playable, but you may build around that area as much or as little as you like. Qualifying examples: public park, theme park, city library, shopping mall, large department store, casino, theater, etc.
3) Each submission
MUST contain at least
5 models of your choosing from BlackRayne's (LT1) site:
http://www.blackrayne.net/models-page.htmlIf you have any difficulties with any of those models, please contact the creator. NOTE: All of the model .zip files on that site must be extracted to your models/mapobjects folder for them to work properly in game!!
4) Each submission
MUST contain
AT LEAST ONE MAN-MADE WATER/LIQUID FEATURE. This does not include an ocean or lake in a skybox or rain. Fountains, swimming pools, koi ponds, anything of that nature is acceptable. The point is that you must construct something that uses a liquid in some obvious way.
Other info:#1 There would be 5 judging categories:
- Technical: brushwork, texture alignments, errors (such as z-fighting)
- Visual: theme, originality, consistency of chosen scheme, attention to detail, effects, realism
- Playability: How well the level plays in each gametype
- Rules Compliance: Any non-compliance of rules
- Overall Enjoyment: pure opinion category, how much the Judge actually likes the level
#2 Each category will receive a score from 1 to 10 from each judge. An average of all Judges' values will determine the winners.
#3 Final scoring for each submission will be published (by category and overall), but only the final averages. Individual scores given by each judge will be kept private.
#4 Winners will be announced on or before Saturday, January 17th, 2009.
